Patterned Cushions

The first project we will examine involves creating a patterned cushion or cushion cover. If you’re like me, then you probably get bored of the pillows and cushions on your couch every so often.

With this project, you can easily create a new set of cushions or cushion covers that will give your living room a lift. All you have to do is decide whether you want new covers or you want to create whole new cushions instead.

For this example, we will look at creating new cushions, where you simply select a new colorful or patterned fabric and cut out equal squares in the desired size.

Then, all you have to do is stitch the two sides together but be sure to leave an opening that is at least 4 inches long so that you can stuff the cushion with chipped foam or other material.

Once it is stuffed, you can hand-sew the opening and have a new cushion.

Pencil Case

Next on our list of cute sewing projects is a new pencil case. This is particularly useful if you have kids who need a new pencil case to go to school.

In order to make this, all you need is a piece of rectangular cloth and fold it while sewing the sides. However, don’t sew it all the way up; you will need space to sew in a long zipper.

Of course, you don’t have to use a zipper, you can use buttons or other types of fasteners.

Once you are done making the body of the pencil case, you can then decorate the outside of the pencil case according to your taste with glitter, patches, monograms or whatever your imagination might cook up.

Ruffled Lampshade

If you know how to make ruffles, you’re all set to create this cool and quirky lampshade that will surely add some interest to your home decor.  All you need is the lampshade, and then choose a fabric you like that matches your current decor.

Cut the fabric into eight three-inch strips. Ruffle each one, and you can sew the edges in a different color to add more contrast.

Once done, use a hot glue gun to attach each ruffle to the lamp and continue until the whole lampshade is covered.
